2023 Projection - David Hensley and Korey Lee
Organizational player makes good and is it now or never for Lee?
David Hensley
A few years ago, Hensley was thought to be an “organizational player”, one that filled a minor league roster spot, but with little chance to make the big club or stick if he did.
That has changed and while no one sees Hensley as a full-time player, the fact that Aledmys Diaz is an Oakland Athletic tells you something.
Can Hensley fill that role? In his limited time with the Astros last year he saw time at four different positions and DH.
Korey Lee
Lee struggled at the plate in his brief time with the Astros in 2022, but that wasn’t unexpected given his irregular playing time and minimal opportunities.
Perhaps of bigger concern is his .258 minor league average over almost 1,000 at-bats and while he smashed 25 home runs last year he has only 39 for his minor league career.
It’s a bit of a conundrum between Lee and Yanier Diaz for the backup catcher role that will perhaps be shared, but the bigger question is what the spot looks like in 2024 with a 37-year-old free agent to be Martin Maldonado.
Up next, Bligh Madris and Martin Maldonado.
