Jose Abreu will replace Yuli Gurriel at first base in the 2023 season.
My projections show a lower batting average, more home runs and more RBI, which seems logical given the right-handed batter's .292 career average, the Crawford Boxes and the number of runners that are likely to be on base when Abreu comes to the plate this season.
Abreu just turned 36, but has played in 97% of possible regular season games over the last 4 seasons.
Given the Astros penchant for resting players Abreu likely won’t reach that level in 2023, but he’ll be an “everyday” presence in the lineup.
These projections have Abreu leading the Astros in plate appearances, at-bats, hits, doubles and tied for the lead in RBI.
The biggest offseason acquisition indeed.
Next up, Jose Altuve.
