When I was a kid I read a book called “Frank: The First Year” about Frank Robinson’s first year as player-manager with the 1975 Cleveland Indians.
There was also a book about the 1968 Detroit Tigers, the title of which escapes my mind (“The Year of the Tiger”?), but the thing these two books had in common were they were day by day chronicles of long and eventful seasons.
A diary, if you will.
I was fascinated and have been since.
The ups and downs of 162 game baseball season have always intrigued me.
In October you tend to forget about the struggles of April or the big hit by the rando guy (J.J. Matijevic, for example) that helped sweep the Yankees in a doubleheader immediately after the All-Star break.
This is a way to look back at those days and the entire season to remember exactly what happened and how you felt.
Instead of chapters these books had an entry for a day, which was generally one game, though sometimes doubleheaders and off day happenings work their way in.
You could read 1, or you could read 20, which is what I typically did.
Last Christmas I gave my son the Frank Robinson book for Christmas and that got me to thinking I could do something similar with the 2023 Astros, but through a modern medium - podcasting.
The episodes will be brief, I’m estimating 8-12 minutes per and will generally be available the day after each game is played.
I’m working to get the podcast available on the various distributors, but its already on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music & Audible and has been submitted to others.
Subscribe at one of the links above and get ready for the first episode to drop Friday, March 31.
I hope you join me for the ride of 2023!
I’ll definitely miss some days. Me and the kid are headed to Arlington for July 3 and on to Houston for July 4! I’m sure there’ll be minor league games in our summer plans as well, but I’ll figure it out. Appreciate the feedback!
An ambitious project, Marty! I look forward to following.....all the way to Parade Day '23!⚾💪
